A man who raped a 71-year-old woman and then claimed she was his girlfriend has been sentenced to 15 years in jail.
Siphimpilo Mbatha, 24, was this week convicted of the rape of the Bilanyoni, Paulpietersburg woman, who was attacked on September 12, 2014.
The woman was accosted while at her homestead, explained police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.
"She was raped and the accused claimed that the victim was his girlfriend," he said.
Police investigated the incident, which resulted in the arrest of Mbatha.
The KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, commended his officers as well as the numerous witnesses who testified and gave evidence against the accused..
